Who are THESE GUYS?!?!?

I also attended the public forum at the Sheldon elementary school in Varysburg. The topic was the real prospect of community owned wind farms. The guest speaker was Mr. Tom Golisano, another representative from Perry, and Sheldon councilman Glen Cramer hosted the meeting. The meeting talked about the many reasons to look into constructing our own community wind farms as opposed to corporate owned wind farms.

Thatâ€TMs not why I am writing this letter. An upsetting detail was brought out into the open and should be addressed right away.

Mr. Golisano asked a simple question at that meeting. He asked if any residents and specifically if the town board had investigated the company that has been schmoozing Sheldon for over 3 years. This particular company is Invenergy and based in Chicago.

Not one person raised their hand, not one single person admitted that they had looked into this company that would have control of large portions of land within this town. Invenergyâ€TMs High Sheldon wind project has been sailing right along on Sheldonâ€TMs much sought after wind. This Chicago based company has, until now, easily slid through the many steps that would ultimately give them exactly what they came for and still no one had answered - who the heck are these guys? These huge corporations show up out of the blue, divide us up among each other, toss a few crumbs and it seems town after town is swallowing it up. And letâ€TMs not forget the millions and millions of dollars that will also be leaving our area with “these guys” year after year.

Why is it we give more thought to choosing a gas station for a couple of cents in savings than whom and what these companies are and what they really represent? These companies are dug in with up to 20 year leases!

Iâ€TMd like to make a little suggestion to all the towns in Western New York, start asking some questions!

Spend some time and do this homework, the findings may save us all a lot of future regret. No matter what your feelings are concerning the turbine issues, what you may think you are going to win or lose as far as any land contracts, pilot payments, etc , that doesnâ€TMt matter. If you are at odds with your own town boards get over it and try to work together. These companies need to be looked into, after all the next generations deserve we at least do this much.

Give your town officials some help and participate in the processes. These are some enormous decisions that the people we have elected are caught up with.

Save Sheldon

David Hohnen is the man behind Cape Mentelle. He planted the first vineyards in 1970, which makes him one of the Margaret River pioneers. The success of this venture led him to found Cloudy Bay in New Zealandâ€TMs Marlborough region in 1985. In 1990 Veuve Clicquot acquired 50% of the business, and then in 2000 they took 100% ownership. In 2002 the present owners, LVMH, bought Veuve Cliquot, and with it Cape Mentelle.

The spot, just 5 km from the ocean, was chosen by Hohnen because of its gravelly soils, which are good for viticulture. They are free draining and have a high mineral content. Winemaker Rob Mann, who was hosting my visit, pointed out that you can spot good potential vineyard land by the type of eucalyptus that grows there. If you see redgums, also known as the Western Australian Marri, then its a good sign, because the Marri likes free-draining soils. If you see Karri and blackbud eucalypts, then beware, because these are an indicator of bad soils. Thereâ€TMs a lot of winter rain here and grapevines donâ€TMt like wet feet.

I live in Bethany, where we're dealing with UPC Wind. Now, that company has interesting roots.

Founder and Chairman Brian Caffyn has the following career highlights listed, according to their website: "10 years of experience in project financing for wind, co-generation, hydro, solar, geo-thermal, waste-to-energy, and biomass energy projects, with G.E. Capital, a small US development company and Heller Financial. 10 years experience running several wind energy companies with primary focus in Italy and US, initially as President of a small US-based wind energy company and later in forming new companies."

The small US-based wind energy company was Cannon Power Corporation, which, along with Coram Energy, put 140 turbines in Tehachapi California in 1988. Those are the ones killing the golden eagles and other raptors. From 1992-1994 (when the eagle carcasses were starting to be discovered at the bottom of the turbines, the rat population exploded and erosion from the tower construction began to destroy the valley), Mr Caffyn sold his interest and moved on to projects in Europe.

From there, he managed Italian Vento Power Corporation, which partnered up with a Japanese corporation to soak millions out of Italy, with trickles of cash going back to the dirt-poor rural folk who live there (and thrilling them at first). As these locals become more savvy in the market and the wind companies are finding they have to share more of their profits, Mr Caffyn finds himself back in the US.

He's running not one, not two, but at least three wind companies that I can find. Each one is pushing a particular state with little to no previous wind energy experience to jump into the market. Each company (Evergreen and Cape Wind are the two I can find) is promising the usual less-than-1% of their profits as payments in leiu of taxes. They are less successful at pushing this through in the US than they have been in Italy.

Still, it remains to be seen whether Pataki and/or NYSERDA will come down on towns that don't cooperate. That'll be an interesting battle.

Research on these folks indicates that they change corporation names rapidly and can be involved in any number of subsidiary companies at any given time. That alone is scary, but the way they seem to jump ship when folks become knowledgeable is ... well, I don't believe I'd trust them. Ever.

(BTW, opinion pieces are usually entered as blog posts, but happy to have you here in any case :)
