(Alabama, NY) -- To celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week, Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) hosted its 17th Annual Youth Fishing Derby, on Saturday, June 7. Seventy-three young anglers from 2 years old to 17 participated. Each participant received a grab bag with fishing related items and a t-shirt commemorating the 50th anniversary of Iroquois NWR. In addition to fishing for fun and prizes there was an activities tent where kids could learn about fish anatomy and adaptations that help fish survive. A casting contest, an awards ceremony, and door prizes rounded out a fun day of fishing.

Recently I was facilitating a team of 15 participants - the group wished to enhance their team skills by creating a culture of empowerment. As I progressed through the training I saw that when I posed a question and asked the team to spend some time (generally 3-5 minutes) planning how they would solve the team building activity - all I heard was silence. Then after about 10 seconds their manager would jump in and tell the team what to do, assign roles and delegate tasks. During the break time I met with the manager and informed him that he was creating a team of Learned-Helplessness. Every time things became challenging and the team was forced to decide, they know if they wait long enough the manager would jump and and save the team from struggling.

Rochester, NY: A state Supreme Court jury nailed personal-injury lawyer James 'The Hammer' Shapiro with a $1.9 million judgment Tuesday in a legal-malpractice case. Jurors found that Shapiro, best known for flamboyant television commercials in which he promises to deliver big cash to accident victims, mishandled the case of client Christopher Wagner, who was critically injured in a two-car crash in Livingston County.

NY farmers fear a shortage of skilled workers

New York farmers say a shift in state policy is making it harder for them to hire experienced seasonal workers through federal guest-worker contracts.

During a meeting with Gov. David Paterson on Monday, farmers said the state Labor Department is forcing less experienced domestic workers upon them by rejecting growers' applications to hire foreign workers on H-2A visas.
