As much as a third of the state's apple crop was damaged by hail this summer, which state officials believe will cost farmers millions of dollars and potentially raise the price for consumers.

"We've never seen as much damage to crops in recent history from hail as this year," said Jessica Chittenden, spokeswoman for the state department of Agriculture and Markets. She said it's too early to estimate what the value will be this year, or how much prices will rise.

Mary Jemison is among the higher-profile historical figures of western New York. But to many, her story -- of capture by Shawnees, adoption into the Senecas, long trek to what is now Livingston County and hardships shared with her Seneca loved ones -- is dry words on a page, the woman merely a statue in Letchworth State Park.

Wyoming Chamber of Commerce to Host Farm Tour

Perry, NY â€" Farming and agriculture have always been the way of life in Wyoming County. However, as people drive to and from work every day, do they think about the magnitude of the farms and dairy operations in the County? Do they see the 80,000 plus mature milking cows in the County the same way the farmer does? Do they think about the business side of farming? Do they think about the number of workers employed by the farms and agribusinesses that operate in the County and what this means to their quality of life and the overall economy of Wyoming County? And have they ever stepped back to think about what Wyoming County would be like without its world-class farms and agricultural industry?
