Hail puts a dent in N.Y. apple harvest

As much as a third of the state's apple crop was damaged by hail this summer, which state officials believe will cost farmers millions of dollars and potentially raise the price for consumers.

"We've never seen as much damage to crops in recent history from hail as this year," said Jessica Chittenden, spokeswoman for the state department of Agriculture and Markets. She said it's too early to estimate what the value will be this year, or how much prices will rise.

Kendall man killed while dismantling barn

KENDALL, NY -- A western New York man is dead after part of a barn he was dismantling collapsed, causing him to fall to the ground.

Orleans County Sheriff's deputies say 58-year-old Frederick Bohn was working on the second story of the barn when part of the roof collapsed on him just before 7 p.m. Monday.

BYRON, NY -- With prices for the "Big Three" in commodities -- corn, soybeans and wheat -- all near historic highs, local farmers are in a good mood this harvest season.

ALBION -- The Villages of Orleans nursing home will receive $625,000 in retroactive Medicaid funding by next spring as part of the Center for Medicaid Services' new formula for reimbursement. County enacts nepotism policy

ALBION -- The Orleans County Legislature established its first employee nepotism policy at its regular meeting Wednesday.

The policy was adapted from a policy already in place in Cortland County, said Chief Administrative Officer Chuck Nesbitt. It is designed to protect employees and guard against situations in which nepotism -- favoritism based on a familial or personal relationship -- could occur, said Legislator Lynne Johnson.

The devastation caused by an act of nature last week may put apple growers and other farmers in 22 upstate counties in the same boat as recently flooded farms in Iowa. At least that's the case they'll be trying to make to federal and state officials as they assess potentially millions of dollars in crop damage caused by last week's hail.
