Hail puts a dent in N.Y. apple harvest

As much as a third of the state's apple crop was damaged by hail this summer, which state officials believe will cost farmers millions of dollars and potentially raise the price for consumers.

"We've never seen as much damage to crops in recent history from hail as this year," said Jessica Chittenden, spokeswoman for the state department of Agriculture and Markets. She said it's too early to estimate what the value will be this year, or how much prices will rise.

BYRON, NY -- With prices for the "Big Three" in commodities -- corn, soybeans and wheat -- all near historic highs, local farmers are in a good mood this harvest season.

"This is a year you can get ahead," said John Starowitz, one of the owners of Star Growers, a 4,000-acre farm based in Byron, about 25 miles west of Rochester.

Route 63 in Livingston, Wyoming counties closed for month

Starting August 4, Route 63 in Covington, Wyoming County, and Leicester, Livingston County, will close for about a month so that state Department of Transportation crews can repair the road.

The roadway is scheduled to reopen to motorists by the start of the upcoming school year, possibly by Labor Day weekend, said DOT spokeswoman Lori Maher.

Community Arts Grants Available to Livingston County

The Genesee Valley Council on the Arts (GVCA) will be awarding grants of up to $5000 to organizations that are interested in presenting or creating an arts-based project in the year 2009. A community-based panel will allocate the funds, which are granted by the New York State Council on the Arts. Not-for profit-organizations, artists, and art groups based in Livingston County are invited to apply.

Two Geneseo men die in Adirondack car crash

Police in the western Adirondacks are investigating an accident that killed two Livingston County men.

Police say 27-year-old William Cook III and 28-year-old John Curry Jr., both of Geneseo, died as a result of the one-car crash near old Forge in Herkimer County just before 3 a.m. Sunday. A passenger in the car, Thomas Albanese, also of Geneseo, suffered a broken leg but was able to flag down a passing car for help.
