We are looking for children 12 years old and under to submit a Christmas Ornament created by them by December 3rd. All entries should be delivered to Batavia Stage Coach Florist. Entries will be judged bsed on most creative, best holiday theme, most colorful, and best use of materials. Great prizes from local merchants will be awarded.

Fire above Pavilion Post Office

Firefighters did their best to save the mail when a fire broke out at the post office building, at 11142 Lake St. in Pavilion, overnight.

The fire actually started in the apartment that is above the post office. The fire chief said it started in a deep fat fryer in the kitchen around midnight. Smoke was billowing from the roof. Firefighters contained the fire to the apartment, but because of all the water they used, some of it leaked into the post office downstairs.

Monday morning, Pontillo's restaurant in Batavia closed up shop temporarily for renovations. "It's all good," owner Sam Pontillo told Daily News reporter Joanne Beck. In that article, which appeared in the Tuesday edition of the Daily, Beck wrote that Pontillo "expects to re-open ... within a couple of weeks."

Pheasant hunter fatally shot in Darien Lake State Park

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspected hunting accident that claimed the life of a 48-year-old Pembroke man.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, John E. Stocking, was hunting pheasants with a shotgun inside Darien Lake State Park when the incident occurred.

Budget mess means winter reductions at some parks

This is my mule Anna Mae and myself. I recently gave her a winter clip, as she grows a tremendous coat of fur causeing her to get uncomfortablly warm. ( She wears a blanket if it gets too chilly) Anyways, with all the hype surrounding the election I was inspired to use her as a canvas.

Just in time for leaf peepers and happy hikers' autumn walks, Genesee Community College announces the grand reopening of its Nature Trail on the southwestern fringe the College's Batavia campus. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 1:00 PM at the Trail's entrance. The ceremony will be held rain or shine, and will feature specially suited refreshments and decorations such as granola bars, GORP (good old raisins and peanuts), locally produced apple cider served in recyclable cups, and a ribbon made from 100% recycled or natural materials including turkey feathers found during the trail's renovation.

Buffalo boxer Joe Mesi has won his party's nomination for the New York state senate.

Mesi, 34, defeated Michele Iannello and Daniel Ward Tuesday night for the Democratic party nod for the Nov. 4 election to fill the seat last held by retiring Republican Mary Lou Rath. Mesi captured 51 per cent of the primary vote on Tuesday.
