Ribbon Cutting Celebrates Revitalized Nature Trail

Just in time for leaf peepers and happy hikers' autumn walks, Genesee Community College announces the grand reopening of its Nature Trail on the southwestern fringe the College's Batavia campus. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 1:00 PM at the Trail's entrance. The ceremony will be held rain or shine, and will feature specially suited refreshments and decorations such as granola bars, GORP (good old raisins and peanuts), locally produced apple cider served in recyclable cups, and a ribbon made from 100% recycled or natural materials including turkey feathers found during the trail's renovation.

Town Of York Boil Water Advisory

According to town officials in York, the town's water system lost pressure due to several breaks in the main water transmission line around 2 pm yesterday.

District Superintendent Thomas J. Manko opted to close York Central Schools on Friday because of the lack of water pressure and size of the district's water reserve. However, all off-campus athletic contests will take place as scheduled, he said.

Medina teacher arrested

The Medina Central School band director is under arrest after allegedly initiating a relationship with two students.

According to NYS Police, 33 year old Scott Ballard of Medina allegedly initiated a relationship with two female students. Both girls were over the age of 17 at the time and no longer attend the high school. The incidents stem back to 2004 and 2006.

School for Blind in Batavia may be privatized

ALBANY " The state Education Department is considering privatizing the School for the Blind in Genesee County because the state is not in a position to operate a full-time residential program recommended by consultants to keep the institution viable.

Boxer Joe Mesi one step closer to senate seat

Buffalo boxer Joe Mesi has won his party's nomination for the New York state senate.

Mesi, 34, defeated Michele Iannello and Daniel Ward Tuesday night for the Democratic party nod for the Nov. 4 election to fill the seat last held by retiring Republican Mary Lou Rath. Mesi captured 51 per cent of the primary vote on Tuesday.
