Iroquois NWR Now Accepting Applications for the Youth Turkey Hunt Day

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Genesee and Orleans Counties is now accepting applications for the Refuge Youth Turkey Hunt Day on May 2, 2010. The Refuge Youth Turkey Hunt Day is open to junior hunters 12 " 17 years of age. Applications are accepted on a first come first served basis. There is no fee to participate but space is limited to 25. To register, interested junior hunters must obtain a Big/Upland Game Hunt Application (form 3-2356). Applications can be requested in person, by phone, by mail or by email at iroquois@fws.gov. A fillable PDF version of the application form may also be downloaded and printed from our website: http://www.fws.gov/northeast/iroquois. Complete and sign the top half of the application. In the “Special Hunt” box select or write in “Youth Hunt”. Please refer to our Turkey Hunting Fact Sheets or our website for additional information. The deadline to register is 4:00 pm, April 17, 2010. Those selected will be notified by mail. Junior hunters must first attend a mandatory orientation at the Refuge office on Saturday, May 1, 1 pm " 3 pm. Permits will be issued upon completion of the orientation.

The Refuge uses a random drawing to fill the fifty turkey hunting permits available. To be entered in the drawing, interested hunters must obtain Big/Upland Game Hunt Application (form 3-2356). Applications can be requested in person, by phone, by mail or by email at iroquois@fws.gov. GLOW Democratic Coalition Endorses Gillibrand

The GLOW Democratic Coalition is pleased to announce its endorsement of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for her 2010 Senate race. The Chairs of the County Democratic Committees in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties enthusiastically back her in the election and are especially pleased with Senator Gillibrand's work on behalf of residents in the GLOW region.

Fall Hours and Events at Iroquois NWR

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge announced today that the refuge headquarters/visitor contact station will be open on weekends, September 26 through October 31, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. This is in addition to its regular business hours of Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., except holidays. The Flyway Nature Store, operated by the Friends of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, Inc., will also operate during these extended hours.

Free Tree ID Walk At Iroquois NWR

The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Genesee and Orleans Counties will host a free nature program on Saturday, September 26. Meet at Kanyoo Nature Trail and join an experienced guide from 1 pm to 3 pm for a pleasant walk through the woods to identify trees.

Senator Gillibrand to Attend Geneseo Event

United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will be the guest of honor at an August 17 event at Sweet Briar in Geneseo. "A Summer Evening with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand" is a fundraiser for the Democratic Committees of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties and will feature light refreshments and a cash bar from 7 to 9 pm.

Hunter Education Waterfow Identification Class

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) located in Alabama and Shelby, New York will host a Hunter Education Waterfowl Identification class on Thursday, August 13 from 7:00 p.m. until approximately 11:00 p.m. There is no charge, but attendance will be limited to 60 people so registration is required. This State-sanctioned course will be taught by instructors from the Finger Lakes and Western New York Waterfowl Association. In addition to waterfowl identification, the course will also cover ballistics, hunter ethics and state and federal waterfowl hunting laws. Participants must pass a written exam to receive a Waterfowl Identification Certificate which is required before hunting waterfowl on Federal and some State lands. To help pass the test, pre-study “Ducks at a Distance” (search “ducks” @ www.usgs.gov)

End Of Summer Birds Field Trip

Ever wonder what birds are here after spring migration and before fall migration? Join “Iroquois Observations” on August 29 for a two hour field trip in the search for warblers and shorebirds, some of the more common birds at this time. The caravan, lead by knowledgeable guides leaves the Kanyoo Nature Trail on route 77 (Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge) at 9 am to travel to various locations on the refuge or nearby. Bring binoculars of you have them to get close up views of the birds discovered. This program is free and appropriate for adults and older children.

GLOW Democrats Meet with State Leaders

Members of the GLOW Democratic Coalition traveled to Buffalo on Saturday, April 4, to meet with New York U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Steven Israel (NY-2) and discuss the needs of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties. “Now that our Democratic committees are working together across our region, weTMre getting opportunities to speak up and be heard. This was a great morning for our coalition,” said Lorie Longhany of LeRoy, Chair of the Genesee County Democratic Committee.
