Avon NY - Some of the biggest employers in Livingston County wouldn't be there if wasn't for a little railroad known as the "LAL."

The Livonia-Avon-Lakeville Railroad was key in bringing Barilla Pasta to Avon. Once construction is completed, the plant will be linked to suppliers and customers by railroad.

Friday, the federal government's top railroad official took a ride and spoke about the vital role short line railroads play.

Federal Railroad Administrator John Boardman said, "This morning I've had the chance to see the progress being made here. And I can tell you the work being done here is about more than putting pasta on the dinner table. It's about creating optimism and opportunity for this region and for the entire nation."

In addition to Barilla, the LAL serves the Kraft plant where Cool Whip is made, and Sweeteners Plus in Lakeville.
