Humanity in the Midst of War

Apr 4 2008 - 2:00pm
Apr 4 2008 - 5:30pm

Humanity in the Midst of War: Introduction to International Humanitarian Law will be taught by Jeremy Grace on Friday, April 4, at the Milne Library on the SUNY-Geneseo Campus, 1 College Circle, Geneseo, from 2:00PM to 5:30PM. The free course is being jointly sponsored by the SUNY-Geneseo Red Cross Club and the Northern Livingston County Chapter.

The class is intended to raise public awareness among the public about the Geneva Convention, the basic rules of international humanitarian law, and the role of the Red Cross during armed conflict to implement International Humanitarian Law. Through a hands-on approach, this course invites participants to reflect on their images and perceptions of armed conflict and explore the powerful concept of human dignity even in the midst of the excesses of war.

Grace is a Professor of International Relations at SUNY-Geneseo also works for USAID, an international program through the U.S. Government. Through USAID, Grace has worked in Nepal, Liberia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bosnia, by helping these nations foster free and fair elections. Through the American Red Cross, Grace is only one of a handful of people who can teach IHL in upstate New York.

For more information on the International Humanitarian Law Class, contact the American Red Cross at 585-243-7029 or via e-mail at nlccross@frontiernet.net.
